Group Health Plans:

Fully Insured, Self Insured and Health Reimbursement Accounts

Most group health plans are defined as:

  1. Having 2 or more employees or owners of the business
  2. Employees must work full time (25 hours or more)
  3. Some documentation of the full time eligible employees/owners. This may be in the form of an Unemployment Insurance return (UI-3), Schedule C, Schedule F, Payroll Records, etc.

Some health insurance carriers may also have additional requirements to prevent adverse selection within their group health insurance plans. These additional requirements can be:

  1. No more 1099 employees than W-2 employees
  2. No management only groups
  3. Full time equal to 30 hours or more

In addition to fully insured programs offered by these carriers, some groups may be interested in self-insured programs or Health Reimbursement Accounts. These types of insurance plans offer additional financial risk to the plan sponsor, but can also be less costly.
